Health workers
in Nigeria, under the aegis of Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and
Assembly of Health Professionals and Associations today, Monday
in Abuja served notice of a three-day warning strike
following alleged breach of agreement by the Federal Government.
The workers
are protesting against the non-implementation of collective bargain agreement
and Memorandum of Understanding and the judgment of National Industrial Court
of Nigeria by the Federal Government.
The workers also flayed the
proposal for the appointment of Surgeon-General of the Federation, saying
Nigeria was drawing precedence from the United States, United Kingdom and Canada
“without any recourse to what is operational in those countries.”
The spokesperson for JOHESU and
President, Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, Dr.
Godswill Okara, at an emergency press briefing in Abuja accused the government of
insincerity and non-commitment to the agreements.
Okara said the display of good
faith, patience, restraint and maturity on the above issues and other perennial
cases of injustices had been taken for weakness by the health ministry, adding
that “in the light of these acts of industrial violations, injustice and
deprivations, members across the length and breadth of the country have no
other choice than to embark on a three-day warning strike
with effect from Wednesday January 22, 2014.”
According to him, JOHESU has come to
the painful decision after an exhaustive appraisal of the outcome of its
meeting with the Ministry of Health on Thursday last week
