UPDATE: Anambra govt promises support to church stamped victims


Anambra state government has announced that it would offer adequate support and compensation to the families of the 25 persons who lost their lives in the Uke Holy Ghost Adoration ground stamped last Saturday.

The state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Chief Joe-Martins Uzodike announced this during a post exco briefing yesterday in his office. He reminded reporters that Governor, Peter Obi had earlier promised to fund the burial expenses of all the deceased persons.
In his address ‘’Exco regretted that the Holy Ghost Adoration , Uke stampede incident could happen in Anambra state where peace and tranquility and decorum had been the order of the day.

‘’Exco noted that police is already investigating the tragedy with a view to ascertain whether it was a mere stampede or machination of any individual or group and resolved that government will give the police every assistance and support needed including financial rewards for any person or persons who will offer useful and credible information to the police with a view to apprehending the masterminds of the stampede.
‘’Exco noted that the Governor had earlier announced that the bills of victims hospitalized at Borromeo Hospital Onitsha and Immaculate Heart Hospital Nkpor will be borne by the state government.

‘’Exco also noted that the Governor had earlier promised to off set the burial expenses of all the deceased persons and as well offer adequate support and compensation to the bereaved families.
Uzodike further stated that ,’’ Government appeals to the good people of the state to remain prayerful in the face of these challenges , and to be rest assured that any person found to have a hand in this ugly incident will never go scot free from the law and God Almighty.

He however appealed to political parties and groups in the state to avoid the consistent acts of bringing thugs and miscreants into places of worship, and urged Ministers of God to resist the temptation of allowing such miscreants who are bent on desecrating the sanctity of the Churches.
